Las Vegas (April 16, 2021) – The Asian Community Development Council (ACDC) is joining forces with a Las Vegas based martial arts studio to raise awareness about the importance of self defense skills in light of increased incidents of violence and discrimination against the Asian American Pacific Islander community across the US.

Professor Denise Gonzales is the Judo and Jujitsu instructor at the Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy. She said learning to protect yourself with self defense and self awareness skills is crucial for anyone at any age.

“Self defense is actually all about common sense. It’s something we can use everyday to stay alert and aware of what’s going on around us,” said Gonzales. “We want to get the word out there that you can take care of yourself no matter who you are, and we will give you the tools you need to do those things”.

ACDC staff members were among those who took part in a special self defense class taught by Gonzales at the Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy. According to ACDC’s Director of Family Services, Edelweiss Solano, she took away some important skills that could be life-saving.

“The best way to defend oneself is to be prepared,” said Solano. “I saw the importance of being vigilant and aware in order to prevent a threat before it occurs. Professor Gonzales made us feel empowered and I look forward to taking what I learn and share with friends and family”.The Asian Community Development Council has been working with local and national agencies and organizations to provide resources for vulnerable communities throughout Nevada, including victims of violence and discrimination.

The Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy is located at 8876 South Eastern Avenue in the Regal Plaza Shopping Center. The studio offers a variety of martial arts classes for students of all ages. For more information, call 702-336-1095 or email inquiry@LVShaolin.com
