Mental Health and Substance Abuse

People who identify as LGBTQ+ often face social stigma, discrimination, and other challenges not encountered by people who identify as heterosexual or gender ‘normative.’ They also face a greater risk of harassment and violence. As a result of these and other stressors, sexual minorities are at increased risk for various behavioral health issues.

Precise incidence and prevalence rates of substance use and abuse by LGBTQ+ individuals are difficult to determine for several reasons: • Reliable information on the size of the LGBTQ+ population is not available. • Epidemiologic studies on alcohol and drug abuse rarely ask about sexual orientation. • Research studies cannot be compared because of inconsistent methodologies. While studies indicate that, when compared with the general population, LGBTQ+ people are more likely to use alcohol and drugs, and have higher rates of substance abuse disorders;, it is important to address each group dynamic and person individually and with cultural sensitivity.

  • Your Guide to LGBTQIAPK Addiction Treatment gives information on what LGBTQIAPK means (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, pansexual, two-spirit, asexual, and ally), substance abuse & addiction information and LGBTQIAPK addiction treatment options.
  • American Addiction Centers also hosts free virtual support and online addiction meetings that many LGBTQ individuals use to help support their recovery.
  • Substance Abuse, Misuse and Addiction Center confronts the challenges the LGBTQ+ community faces, including common co-occurring disorders among the LGBTQ+ community, and treatment centers and where to get help.
